Behind the Curation - SketchBox Signature
As some of you are aware, a few years back we started working on our own brand of art supplies: SketchBox Signature. Why? We felt we could provide a high quality supply at a better price to our customers since we sell directly to them. We took a look at the way the consumer product market is moving, and that’s where we found our inspiration. A great example is Warby Parker that manufacturers their own glasses and sells a high quality product at a reasonable price because they cut out the middle man.
This month we shipped our first run of watercolor pencils, and we’re really happy with the results. Initial customer feedback has been incredibly positive and we’re so happy our subscribers are putting them through their paces and creating beautiful art with them. We spent a lot of time researching the best lead type that would allow for an easy color lift with water. Our pencils lay down vibrant pigment that isn’t incredibly permanent, which allows you to create transparent washes that don’t show the pencil marks underneath. Then came the pencil design, color selection, and package design. After the product had been designed we needed to handle getting pencils from their factory in Indonesia to our facility here in the USA. You’d be surprised how complicated and stressful that process can be. Container freight has to be arranged on a large ship which can stay on the ocean for months at a time. Once it arrives at a port here in the USA, customs has to inspect and release your product. As we mentioned in our last newsletter, even after planning well in advance, due to delays outside of our control our pencils were released JUST IN TIME for our monthly box assembly line. We really appreciate you allowing us to take a chance on this product and we really think it paid off.
So what’s next for SketchBox Signature? This year we’re going to expand the choice of colors of items people were most happy with - our color brushes and brush markers. We’ve also got a few new products in development, but we’re not going to spoil those surprises just yet.
